Liza Dadone, VMD, Giraffe Medicine Consultant

Dr. Liza Dadone is a zoo veterinarian with expertise in giraffe medicine. She assists zoos and ranches with their giraffe care and serves as a veterinary advisor for giraffe in the American Zoological Association (AZA). 

Dr. Dadone has more than 18 years of zoo veterinary experience. After graduating from University of Pennsylvania College of Veterinary Medicine, she completed a zoo internship at the Calgary Zoo and a zoo residency at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. She then worked for 12 years at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo as a head veterinarian, and then as a vice president. 

She founded Giraffe Veterinary Services in 2023, to provide innovative specialty care for giraffe in the US and internationally. Dr. Dadone has recognized expertise in giraffe lameness management, neonate care, and emergency medicine, and has been part of more than 100 giraffe anesthesia procedures. She presents internationally on giraffe health and shares research and cases in peer-reviewed publications. She also helped found and co-lead the Giraffe Plasma Bank to help better address health issues of newborn giraffe, and assists Animal Search and Rescue (ASAR) with emergency response for giraffe and other wildlife species.

Dr. Dadone has has long-term field experience and partnerships in wildlife conservation. This includes assisting with anesthesia, transport, and reintroduction of giraffe populations in both Uganda and Niger, and mountain tapir anesthesias and health assessments in the Andes mountains of Ecuador. She is on the advisory board of Save Giraffes Now and regularly collaborates with the Andean Bear Foundation.
